Commentary: ‘Best defensive mind’ difference maker at Auburn

Football period. Move over Bill Belichick. Muschamp is better in Malzahn’s opinion.I’m not buying that, but if Muschamp lives up to Malzahn’s high praise, he can be to Auburn this season what Lane Kiffin was for Alabama last season – the difference maker.“Definitely,” Auburn senior cornerback Jonathan Jones said. “Both of them are great coaches. You can see the success to where they’ve been previously. (Muschamp) is going to bring in a great, intense defense. People are going to see changes right off the bat.”Auburn needs the former Florida head coach to make that kind of impact if it’s going to seriously contend for an SEC title and a spot in the College Football Playoff. If Muschamp doesn’t, it won’t matter how good Jeremy Johnson plays at quarterback or how talented senior receiver D’haquille Williams is. It won’t matter how effective Malzahn’s offense is.If the Tigers can’t stop people, they will finish with four losses minimum this season. Muschamp is at Auburn to make sure defense isn’t the reason the Tigers fall short of preseason expectations — again.“You see how important everything is to him,” Auburn senior linebacker Kris Frost said. “That’s one of the first things he said in one of the first meetings we had. It’s kind of carried us on. Everything is important. Every practice. Every time you step into the film room. Every day you wake up. What you put in your body. Everything is important.”Lack of defense is why the Tigers didn’t win the SEC or make the playoffs last season. In their last four losses, Auburn yielded an average of 481.25 yards of total offense to finish 8-5.Wisconsin rushed for an ungodly 400 yards on Auburn in the Outback Bowl with Melvin Gordon churning out 251 yards and three scores in the 34-31 overtime win. That’s unacceptable. That’s inexcusable. That’s something those who have played for Muschamp can’t see happening under his watch.“If he stays there long enough, it’s going to be one of the best (defenses),” Florida senior defensive end Jonathan Bullard said. “He’s going to recruit. He’s going to get guys that you want and he’s going to turn the defense around. They’re going to do it his way whether they want to or not, that’s for sure, but his way works. If I were those guys, I would buy in.”Muschamp has been praised by the Auburn players for his energy, passion and enthusiasm, but he’s also been called crazy and borderline insane by those who have watched him coach over the years. At any moment, he’s capable of cutting loose over anything from lack of execution to halftime entertainment. “One time, we were at South Carolina and they were doing something at halftime,” Bullard said. “We had ran back out and it was fireworks actually about to go off on our sideline. We were standing on the sideline and he kind of lost it. I was like, hey, you didn’t have to do it like that.” Sounds funny, but Malzahn needed someone to immediately change the defensive culture and mindset at Auburn. Muschamp seems to have done that and then some. “One thing that Coach Muschamp has created is really maximizing our potential and knowing what we’re good at as well as doing thing completely different,” Frost said. “Things that maybe as a player you didn’t think you really had in you, but when you start to do those things, you start to realize I can do those things.” Having defensive end Carl Lawson back 100 percent from his season-ending knee injury of year ago is a huge boost to Auburn’s defense. If Lawson plays at the level he did as a true freshman, he’ll help a secondary that was repeatedly burned last season and is thin as tissue paper this season by providing a much-needed pass rush. “We had to take some chances,” said Malzahn about last year. “We put some DBs on some islands, but the bottom line is we just got to get better.”Auburn can have all the pass rush in the world, but it still has five incoming freshmen and nine scholarship players in the secondary. You still have to make plays on the ball and play disciplined on the back end to keep rushers motivated to continue pressuring the quarterback. The most demoralizing play in college football is giving up a long pass. So Muschamp’s biggest challenge is to make sure the Tigers keep that to a minimum this season.“We do different things scheme-wise, but he just wants us intense,” Jones said. “Once we bring that physical effort, we’ll be fine.”Got a feeling fine is unacceptable for Muschamp. He wants the Tigers to be the finest on defense and since Muschamp is as good as it gets in Malzahn’s opinion, I’m expecting the same out Auburn’s defense this season, too.last_img read more

There are a couple weeks left and this is the tightest competition they’ve ever seen. They still are not sure who will be playing in the league finals. Anyways, once the season is over, they have their annual all star game called “Skate of Origin”. It’s like the old North American vs. The World all star format where players play for they team they are from. In the Skate or Origin you have the South Island vs. the North Island (as NZ is made up of two main islands). This year the game will take place in the Auckland suburb of Botany. They’ve just released their jerseys and I think the idea behind the logos is an interesting one:The North Island team will wear the sting ray jersey as it has to do with the Maori legend on how the North Island was formed. (Legend here: )The South Island team will wear the jersey with the eagle which is for the extinct giant Haast’s eagle which used to call the South Island skies home before it became extinct.Feel how you will about the jerseys but I think the idea behind the logo choice is interesting… especially for the North Island team.More on the jerseys here: Share this post 196 Link to post Favourite Logos:Toronto Blue JaysHamilton Tiger-CatsBoston BruinsFlying ElvisNew Milwaukee Bucks Weagle Location:The Canadian Prairies -kj Link to post 196 Members Members I dig that.
