first_imgAdvertisements RelatedWhite Marl Primary Gets Face-Lift from Inmates White Marl Primary Gets Face-Lift from Inmates UncategorizedAugust 16, 2008 RelatedWhite Marl Primary Gets Face-Lift from Inmatescenter_img FacebookTwitterWhatsAppEmail The White Marl Primary and Junior High School in St. Catherine has benefitted from a two-day clean-up, by over 40 inmates from various correctional facilities, under the Inmates Public Work Rehabilitation Programme, organised by the Department of Corrections.During a tour of the school, yesterday (August 14), Commissioner of Corrections, Major Richard Reese, pointed out that the work programme, for which the selected inmates are paid a stipend, offered them a chance to give back to society.Major Reese said he was pleased that the programme had received the full backing of the Ministry of National Security.Mayor of Spanish Town, Dr. Andrew Wheatley, said the project should be applauded, as it formed part of the whole rehabilitation process.“I believe that by instilling in them (inmates), that sense of contribution, it will mould them into better persons, so that when they return to the society, they are better able to integrate and appreciate the society as it should be,” he said.Minister of State in the Ministry of National Security, Senator Arthur Williams, cited the tremendous support, which the programme has received from various stakeholders, including the Private Sector Support Committee and private sector companies.Senator Williams pointed out that many requests have been received for the services offered under the programme and they were being actively considered. However, he noted that alongside the benefits of the programme, there are also security concerns.“I want everyone to understand that this programme must not suffer any setback because of security risks. Every time we do a project, it is one that is properly assessed for risks and any project we cannot do, it’s because of security concerns.
